Seether

Gigz with Dale Stewart, Nick Oshiro, and Pat from Seether @ the Hard Rock Cafe

November 2002

RC: And it's a great pleasure of the Rock Circus to come
down to the Hard Rock Cafe once again and hang out
with these guys, Seether. They have a new record
out Disclaimer. (holds up the CD to show the
cover) You may look at this one and say hey that's
not the one I have, they have ten different
pictures for the cover, which is something unique.
I don't think any other band has ever really done
that, how did you come up with that one? This is
Dale, bassist, founding member as well.
Dale: Umh..., that came through from the director of our
video "Fine Again" Paul Feeder. He came up with the
idea of the people bearing their souls and holding
up the signs and we thought it was a good concept.
It's kind of like a thread that runs through the
whole album, the fragility, or whatever you want to
call it, you know in people. People are always
screwed up about something, even if they act like
     they're not.
RC: We're all screwed up.
Dale: Everyone's screwed up in their own way.
RC: Now Nick did you come in to the afterwards, after
the production and everything was done? I saw that
Josh Freeze came in and did most of the drum
     tracks.
Nick: Yeah
RC: Did they have like a... hey show up and see if you
can make the cut or were you refered by somebody?
Nick: I heard about the audition, there were seventeen
of us and it happened in... What was that studio
     called?
Dale: That was umh...(blank stares for a minute)
Nick: I can't remember... Leads!
Dale: Leads (snapping his finger).
Nick: Leads Rehearsal Studio, actually I'm from Vegas so
I'm about four hours away from where the audition
was. I worked like a half day, drove the four hours
to get there, did the audition, and then drove back
that night. Then they called me about a week later.
RC: What a trubador, a rock n'roll trubador. Aren't you
supposed to have a big ego now... (laughter) Hey
man I did this and then did that. Now you guys
have been playing "Fine Again," it's been playing
on the radio pretty hard, has MTV2 or MTV picked
     that up at all?
Dale: Yeah, there playing it on MTV2 and on MTV. On that
rock show All Things Rock Related, they're playing
     it.
RC: Yeah, they got back in to it cause it's trendy. Now
when you went into the studio did you have a lot
of material worked out or was it something that you
and you're lead singer Shaun, who's under the
weather today that's why he's not here, was it all
worked out or did you work with the producer on it
     more, fine tune it some?
Dale: We did a lot of the preproduction in South Africa
with a guy from Wind-Up Records, Victor. We'ld
speak to him on the phone and he pretty much told
us what they're looking at or what he thinks. So we
started preproduction there and did some more in
New York before we started recording. Yeah, and
then we flew out to LA.
RC: And did it all there.
Dale: Yeah
RC: Now this is your new guy Pat, how long have you been
with them? Did you hook up on the road?
Pat: A little over a month ago. They were touring
through Philly, right before they did Ozzfest, and
my band was playing with there band. We hit the bar
and they were like, "we need another guitarist,
     whats up?"
RC: Snatched you right up.
Pat: I think I bribed them with drinks. I was like
     here... here...
Dale: I think anyone who can drink that much...
RC: Could be in the band. (laughter) What kind of beer
do you guys drink over there in Africa?
Dale: We usually drink Kailing Black Label.
RC: What's that like? Is it a rougher, darker beer?
Dale: It's kind of like a Budweiser.
RC: The equivalent to Budweiser, I'm a bourbon man
myself. Do they have any cool drinks over there,
     any wild and exotic drinks?
Dale: Not really... there is one thing which you don't
get here, it's called Potency. It's like
concentrated Red Bull and Vodka, it's in a bottle
and it's probably about 25% alcohol and you have
     shots of it.
Nick: It looks like Tide almost, it's got a real weird
blue purple tint to it, I don't know about that
     stuff.
RC: Now how long have you guys been out on the road for
just a little while now or are you out doing it
     hard?
Dale: Yeah, it's been a while now, it's been about four
     months.
Nick: Yeah, since July.
RC: Have you been in Pittsburgh?
Dale: I don't know if we've actually played Pittsburgh
     yet.
Nick: We played Philedalphia.
Dale: I think that's the closest one we did.
RC: We're always the last to get the good bands, but hey
it's a good thing cause you sold out the Hard Rock
here tonight. As far as the next track, listening
to this thing you guys are phenomenal writers, the
bass lines you lay in "Gasoline." I was like that's
so cool, it's just a nice little... I don't even
know what you're doing and I play guitar...
     slide shuffle...
Dale: I'm just sliding it up and down man.
RC: Like a three fret thing?
Dale: Just up and down man, pretty much, it's actually
     real simple.
RC: Really, it sounds like it's a little intricate. Well
you're probably a seasoned player and all, I'm
sure the beginer couldn't come off with that.
     (joking)
Dale: I don't know man, I consider myself a beginer to
     be completely honest.
Pat: He's a wicked guitar player.
Dale: I don't know about wicked, but I moved over from
guitar to bass about three and a half years ago so
I basically just took on a new form of guitar
     and...
RC: Applied it?
Dale: Trying, I mean I don't know scales or anything.
I'm just like yeah, that sounds cool, I'll try it.
RC: Basically all I know is penatonic scales on guitar.
I have buddies that try to get me to play bass and
I'm like ohh man, but maybe I'll learn from you
Dale and try to capitolize on it. A little
question, over in Africa do they have better weed
over there? I heard about the ganga and how it can
     twist your mind.
Dale: Can I say this on air?
RC: Oh yeah, we're cable access.
Dale: It's real good, it's real cheap.
Nick: You know what, I don't think it's better than the
     US hydro.
Dale: You can get hydro there too, you can get a lot of
stuff there, stuff that cames over the border.
RC: Is that about all you dabble in?
Dale: Yeah, just to keep your mind stretched. It's
either having a joint or taking some kind of pill.
Nick: Everyone's on drugs, wether you take Advil or some
     kind of herbal medicine.
RC: It just bums me out, how hard they are on it.
Nick: I think the effects are a lot less than alcohol.
Dale: It's made out to be a lot worse than it is,
      through movies and all.
RC: It's good medicinally for crazy people like me...
Dale: Everyone's crazy!
RC: So you guys are gonna ride with the "Fine Again"
video through the rest of the year, through
      January?
Dale: We'll be doing our new video in early January.
RC: Have you picked a track?
Dale: We're not sure what track it's going to be yet.
We've been talking about going towards something
      that's a little more...
RC: Agressive, that's what I was hoping it would be.
Dale: (nods)Hard rock, you know, maybe "Gasoline" or
something, "Diving Under" is another possible one.
We just got to work it out.
RC: Have a few fist fights over it, a few drunk nights.
Nick: Keep the Jueger away during that time.
RC: Well the website is www.seether.com if you want to
learn more about the band. Thanks guys.
