Moth

Gigz with Brad Stenz, Bob Gayol, Ted Liscinski, and Atom Willard from Moth @ Club Laga

RC: Yes indeed, it's a great
     pleasure of Rock Circus
to come to Club Laga and
     hang out with these cats.
     We're hanging with Ted,
Adam, Bob and Brad the founding
member of Moth. Now you were forged out
of Cincinatti but you orignally came from New York,
Brad. Did you grow up in NY?
Brad: Yeah.
RC: That's kind of odd for some musicians, to migrate
away from NY. Was there a reason?
Brad: My momma met a man.
(laughter)
RC: What kind of man drives away a momma's son?
Brad: The sandman.
RC: It was a family thing?
Brad: Yeah, I was young.
RC: I'm sorry I didn't catch that.
Brad: That's OK.
RC: Well that's what Moth is for, to vent some of
that pain. Now you started this off yourself and
these guys came in after the album production was
    done?
Brad: Yeah, it's a shame.
RC: Did you bring Bob in because you were hearing more
sounds in your head than you could fill with one
     guitar?
Brad: Exactly, in 94'.
RC: Now you're more punk influenced, were as Bob is
more rock influenced, but you play off of each-
other really nice. How did you come up with that?
Bob: Oh, well Moth was a three piece band and I was
always a fan. So when I got on board with Brad
our styles just sort of meshed and we've been a
good team ever since. With these guys in the band
now, we feel more complete than ever.
RC: Did you come aboard in 89'? Was that when your
first conception of the band started to work out?
Brad: Yeah.
RC: That was a while ago. This has been a long works
     in progress.
Brad: It's been a long road?
RC: Now you guys came in after. What did you do, put
an add in a rock-n-roll magazine, wanted drummer
and bass player or was this a word of mouth deal?
Ted: I was working at Starbuck's and I din't figure
I cold answer the add. I wasn't doing anything
else, I was just pouring coffee. So Brad was on
the other end and it's been magic ever since.
     Hasn't it Brad?
Brad: Yeah, "I like the way he spanks my ass, I like
     the dirty things he does."
RC: Things that go on, on the back of the bus. Now
you were in the Headway/Angry Inch production,
     or the movie?
Ted: Both
RC: Was there a Broadway play of some sort?
Ted: It was an off Broadway play and then it went
through LA. I went to LA to do it to and ended
up moving there, and staying there. That's kind
of how I ended up in the band. Some mutual
friends saw me in the play and he's the guy who
ended up playing on their record. So when they
needed a bass player he was like give Ted a
     call, and that was that.
RC: Cool, it all worked out. How are things going on
the road? Are you finding you're own way with
everything, you're own little influence seeping
     in?
Ted: I suppose so. Yeah, sometimes I think we're a
little to tired to tell. But I think every-
thing's going pretty smoothly so far. We're
     having a good time.
RC: Do you think you'll be able to get more involved
when it comes time to write the next CD? Not that
Provisions, Fiction and Gear isn't a wonderful
work, this guy's quite prolific. But do you think
     you'll have an equal say.
Ted: Well I don't think he has too many problems
with my bass playing, So I think if I want to
throw something on he'll be cool with it.
RC: Now Atom you come from a band I used to dig a
lot Rockets from the Crypt. And then you were
one with one of the Weezer guys side project.
Was that your most recent and whatever happened
     to Rockets from the Crypt?

RC: Musician's blues story.
Atom: I had to move on.
RC: How did you get involved with this little project?
Atom: I had a similar story.
RC: Now you guys are out on the road. Is this like 2
years out on the road, nonstop promotion?
Brad: That's exactly right, I think we're just gonna
keep doing it as long as they keeping booking
     dates.
RC: Now I wanted to ask you about the song I dug "Not
Really". Which is kind of like an acoustic diddy.
How did you come up with that?
Brad: To be completely honest I took a guitar and I sat
on my couch. I said I have nothing to do today, I
want to write a good song and that's exactly what
     happened.
RC: That's how it happens, there's some deep insight.
That's cool though. Now you guys were influenced
     by Pavement and Dinosaur Jr?
Brad: Yeah, Fugazi, Jesus Lizard, those are all bands
that I like a lot. I try not to be influenced by
them. I try to be more of a fan of the music.
RC: Does it kind of open you more to the paths of the
punk scene you were in at the time? Did it kind of
open the doors a little bit?
Brad: Yeah, as far as what they do they opened the doors
for other bands to follow. I take more influences
from like Brokowsky or David Lynch. Or something
like that as oposed to the other bands. I think
no matter what we do Moth's Moth.
RC: Is that who influenced your guitar playing the most? Brad: No, I try not to let anybody... RC: Nobody, nobody! What was the first rif you learned? Brad: Hmmm... RC: Deep Purple, "Smoke on the Water". Brad: Yeah (laughing) RC: That's the first one I learned. How about you Atom. You're a rock-n-roller. Atom: Probably like Black Sabbath. Like "War of Pigs" or "Paranoid" or "Fairies Wear Boots", stuff like that. RC: Did you see Sabbath on the reunion tour? Adam: I saw Sabbath once with Ozzy, Sabbath closed the show. They came out for like one song and that was like the encore. RC: Now tell me a little bit about the video "I See Sound." The first track they're gonna promote, has it been signed to radio already? Brad: Yeah, a few stations have picked it up already. A station in Seattle and K-Rock's picked it up. RC: Don't look at Pittsburgh as an influential town. We look at other playlists first. But we'll play it here on Rock Circus. Brad: It's a rad video. We just finished making it like a week ago. It was a 2 day process. We used a new director who's been working with MTV. He's like 23 years old so was kind of hard to take direction from him. I kind of wanted to give him a back-hand. No just kidding, he's a really nice guy. It's a great video. RC: Where did you tape it at? Brad: LA. RC: A warehouse, or in the middle of a gang fight or something. Brad: Hollywood. RC: Cool, out in the sunset strip or with Craig Kilbourn and a bunch of ladies. Or you went to the Hugh Hefner mansion and the whole bit. Brad: No, we were with AJ Benza and there was a lot of smoke around (laughter). RC: Well hey guys I'ld like to thank you for your time. Right now we're gonna kick the video off, here's "I See Sound."
