RC: And the Rock Circus is out here at the Wheeliefest
in Rowland PA, about a five hour roll from
Pittsburgh. We're here with Marc Ford, formerly of
the Black Crowes and it's a great honor to have him
on the show.
Marc: Thank you
RC: So you're up to this right now, Marc Ford's latest,
It's About Time. You have a host of players on
here, it's phenomenal, Warren Haynes and Allen
Woody. Did you record this when he was alive or did
you take bass tracks that he previously recorded.
Marc: No, I went out and they had such a busy schedule
on the road that I grabbed a guitar case and a
little tiny amp and caught them on a day off, and
booked the only studio that was open in Detroit. We
recorded four or five songs. It was one of the last
studio things that he did before he passed.
RC: What are the names of the songs?
Marc: He did "Just Let it Go" and "Two Mules and a
Rainbow."
RC: Nice little homage to Allen Woody. If your fans of
Government Mule, there's a few heads in Pittsburgh
that are in to that, so they'll be appreciating
that. So you have a couple majors parlaying you
right now, any decisions on which way you're gonna
go or are you just kind of riding it right now?
Marc: Well I've been selling on my website marcford.net,
it is now, and then meanwhile I've been shopping
into labels. A lot of people are interested I just
haven't really decided which one to go with. I
haven't had the right offer yet.
RC: Yeah, you got to sit down with your lawyers and all
that. Make sure all the business is taken care of.
Are you gonna rerelease this on a major or were you
gonna go in and record some new stuff.
Marc: Well, this hasn't officially been released yet.
RC: Oh, so we're privelaged on Rock Circus, Rock F***ing
Circus that is!
Marc: Yeah, yeah, that's right. (chuckling)
RC: How long have you been out touring?
Marc: We just flew in yesterday, this is our first show.
Tonight we got Brad sitting in with us on bass,
Berry Oakley Jr. has another gig to do tonight.
RC: You're jamming with Berry Oakley Jr.?
Marc: Yeah, he's in the band.
RC: Now who's in your live band?
Marc: The live band is Berry, Gootch, and Chris Joyner.
RC: We've had Barry on the show. The last time I talked
to him he was kind of at odds ends with the Rock
N' Roll Hall of Fame, about some guitars that his
dad... I don't know how that ever went. That's cool
that he's back out doing it and in you're live band
right now.
Marc: Yeah I know what you're talking about, his dad's
bass, he did get it back.
RC: Yeah two of his dad's basses or something, and he
got disinvited from the from their ceremony, the
Allman Brothers induction ceremony.
Marc: Yeah, I don't know, that's some really weird
politics going on there, it's a shame.
RC: I haven't really heard this album yet. I haven't
cracked the flesh off of it so to speak, are you
still hanging hard with the rock and the blues?
Marc: Yeah, it's a wide range of stuff. Everybody heard
me play guitar so I wanted to show them that I
could write.
RC: You kind of had to play under Chris Robinson's
shadow a little bit, because it's such a powerful
duo. Do you feel like this kind of gives you a
chance to step out and exercise a few more things
that you haven't been able to do.
Marc: Oh yeah, songwriting mostly, and I get back to
singing again. It's a lot of fun.
RC: Well you must be doing well if you have a major
label interest and a solid band to tour with.
We'll be looking forward to seeing you in
Pittsburgh. But right now you can check it out,
It's About Time by Marc Ford, legendary
guitarist of the Black Crowes.
Marc: Thank You.
