RC: Yes indeed, just brought out the piece, Rock Circus is
hanging out with our boys D-Loc and Johny Richter from
Kottomouth Kings.
Johny: What's happening?
RC: Now where did you get this at?
D-Loc: This is a gift we got from a smokeshop called The Grassy
Nole in Texas.
RC: How long do you think that took to make?
D-Loc: I don't know. We're stoked on it. It's a killer little
roadpiece. It really came together. It wasn't hitting to
good the first day, I will say that. But we changed the
bowl.
Johny: The other bowl was to top heavy. You gotta get the right
popping to go. Sometimes they don't pop right, they get
clogged so easy.
D-Loc: The bottom line is the bowl came together and it's here.
RC: The DEA came in to the guy's shop who sponsors our show for
clothing and made him take all his bongs and pipes off of
the shelves. The headshops downtown, the Harry Krishna's,
they're in jail just for selling pipes and bongs.
Johny: There wasn't any laws on that already? How was he
selling them?
RC: They were getting lacks on it and all of a sudden they
decided to get tough again.
Johny: Can't sell pipes these days, what's this world coming
to.
RC: The dudes over there just trying to make a buck, trying to
make a living.
Johny: It's an art too. They're just trying to express
themselves. It's a hard thing to do, to blow glass like
that. It takes training and years of technique. That's the
way they express themselves. They can't even sell their
art. We're gonna put limitations on art now, wow!
RC: Did anybody ever freak you out that smokes pot?
D-Loc: I don't think anything freaks me out. I smoked bud with
both my parents and it didn't freak me out. Ain't no big
thing over here.
Johny: My parents aren't really into it. But freaked me out,
I don't know. Little young ones, like single age digits,
they're like lets blaze up. You're like wo!
RC: What age do you belive is you're old enough to start?
Johny: When you understand it. Some people mature at different
ages.
RC: Now this is the last Capitol release I have. I didn't get
the new one yet, you released Hidden Stash 2?
Johny: The Cream of the Crop.
RC: The Cream of the Crop on the Suburban Noise Label, which
is your label. When did that come out, last year?
Johny: That came out last October.
D-Loc: The new Kottonmouth Kings has 18 tracks. It's all new
tracks. It has a lot of the same vibe as this one but
there's definately some different places that we took
this CD, our new one. It's probably my up to date
personal favorite Kottonmouth CD. We made it as a
group, our new one that you don't have.
RC: You're making me feel real bad, I'll go out and get
it. You're working on a new one for the major label.
Johny: Yeah, it's done right now. We're getting the packaging
ready to put it out. It's coming out Oct. 8th. It's
already done. It's called A Rollin' Stone. It's like 18
tracks, all new songs again. Just keep doing it, that's
what we do.
RC: You said this is probably the most diverse record you've
recorded. Do you believe that?
D-Loc: By far, no doubt about it. The butter's better. We
drank one beer and the record went different places.
Johny: Definately went some different places.
D-Loc: We're stoked just to have the opportunity to put out
records, straight up. We're stoked just be able to make
records and have stuff come together like this.
RC: That's a great thing.
D-Loc: That's what we're stoked on and we're gonna make the
most out of every opportunity that we have. If we get
another opportunity to make another record we'll
definately make the most out of that. So we're just
gonna keep doing our thing. We're getting older as
people and musicians so we're learning still.
RC: Did it take you a little longer for this record?
D-Loc: I think the longer you've been doing it, the longer
you've been in this game, the faster you come up with
stuff.
Johny: To me it doesn't seem like it took long to do. It
seemed pretty quick but other people trip on how fast
we do them. The way we get in and work, it ain't like,
it's not a set way.
RC: You guys are masters of the mix.
D-Loc: Somedays we'll go in and we'll have some of the song
written, the main part, and we'll have none of the
verses done, none of our parts. We do the song and we'll
sit there and just feed off of the energy and creative
vibe. We'll sit there and just fill the track. We'll
come up with our sh** right there in a couple of hours.
We'll lay it down that night and there's a song in one
day.
RC: When you're projects done is there some anxiety waiting
for the release date?
Johny: That's there for sure. I listen to different mixes and
we get the versions of it. I hear it and I just wish
that I could play it. Whenever other people hear it,
like our friends hear it cause we listen to it at our
houses, and they're like that to. They're like god why
can't we get this until October. Why do we gotta wait
that many months to get it.
RC: Well, they get to listen to the tape.
D-Loc: It's like a good hand release. This big ball of energy
that builds up.
RC: Boom!
D-Loc: It's just like ughhh, it's done.
Johny: It's phone sex, yah know what I mean. You're talking
to this chic and you can't see her. You're talking to
her and you're getting your hand release. You're hearing
that voice and you're like wow. You just can't wait to
go and see it and it actually be the real thing.
RC: How do you feel about the state of rap now? Kids that are
coming out like Eminem. I mean he's like one guy and he's
so big. You're out here busting you're ass, climbing over
stuff, trying to discover sh**.
D-Loc: I think stuff like that just adds fuel to my fire, the
drive I have. It just shows me that people are doing it
and people like everybody else can do it. Cause every-
one's a person, everyone's an individual, everybody's on
a certain level you can get to. It just adds fuel to the
fire like that. It gives people like myself and other
young artists a bunch of opportunities to do this sh**.
So you know what I mean, it's cool.
RC: Now how long are you out on the road?
Johny: This is like a little five weeker. We're a touring band,
that's what we like to do. We like to make music and play
it for the people. Sitting at home we're not doing any-
thing. We sat home and did an album and now we gotta go
out and tour. We gotta wait this long for our album to
come out so...
D-Loc: This is what we're about, music. That's why we started
this and that's why we're in it. It's like let's do this,
let's make this happen, you know what I mean.
Johny: I love the shows every night. If we're sitting at home
we can't go play the same clubs every night, yah know.
D-Loc: Where else could you be but with a bunch of happy good
people, positive vibes, drinking beer and smoking bud.
Having a good time every night that's how we are.
RC: You work hard for this, what you do have.
D-Loc: We've been doing this for 7 years. We definately worked
hard and paid some dues, no doubt about that. But it's
fun and we're all about it, we're gonna continue to do
it ?
RC: Have you shot a video for this upcoming project?
D-Loc: Oh yeah, we have a new video coming out called "Stoners
Reeking Havic." It's like our dopeumentary of our band
but this is more like a lifestyle. It shows our concerts...
Johny: Live songs from different spots.
D-Loc: It shows us chilling out with our homeboys, riding our
dirt bikes, just hanging out around our house. It's called
"Stoners Reeking Havic" and it comes out this August. If
you like our dopeumentary, stuff like that from the
Kottonmouth Kings, this is definately something you should
pick up.
RC: Ya know, I was watching Comedy Central's Insomniac this
week and they were up in Boston. There was dudes just
smoking in the street up in Boston and the dude had a big
ass Kottonmouth Kings shirt on and I was like yeah, props
to the boys! Anyways we gotta roll into a video, thanks
guys.
